Healthcare is all in the family at Reston Hospital

Mom inspires her children to join the medical field.

From L to R, Cade Lawhorne (son, 19), Becki Lawhorne (mom), and Abby Lawhorne (daughter, 21)

Half of the Lawhorne family drives to the same location to work every day. For Becki (mom), Abby (daughter, 21), and Cade (son, 19), it is the people at Reston Hospital who make their jobs so rewarding.

Assistant Chief Nursing Officer Becki Lawhorne joined HCA Healthcare almost eight years ago at StoneSprings Hospital and became part of the Reston Hospital family in June 2023. “Interestingly, my daughter worked here as a scribe in the emergency department before I came aboard here. She says I followed her,” Becki said. “I couldn’t wait to come here for the opportunity to grow professionally and the ability to get to know more people. It is so rewarding to be a part of a bigger ‘work family.’”

Abby Lawhorne has become a nurse extern while she attends Chamberlain University for nursing and said she has enjoyed the opportunity to learn, grow, and engage with the team of nurses and physicians in the emergency department. “I have always been intrigued by medicine and started working at Reston Hospital last year to gain healthcare experience. As someone new to the healthcare setting, I knew being in a high acuity and trauma center would bring a lot of interesting cases from multiple specialties into one place,” Abby said.

The youngest Lawhorne, Cade, joined Reston Hospital as a transporter in February 2024. “My mom told me there's a lot of opportunity in the healthcare field and jobs are in high demand. She said working at Reston Hospital is great for someone young who wants to get an idea of what's out there in the medical field. I have always loved working with people and this was a great opportunity for me to do so,” he said.

The Lawhornes don’t take working in the same facility for granted. Becki said she loves working alongside her kids. “I enjoy watching them grow and develop in the healthcare arena just as much as I enjoy watching our teams grow. I am harder on them though. They will say that, I am sure,” Becki shared.

“It's really amazing to be in the same hospital as I know my mom is a really hard worker and loves what she does for a living,” Cade said.

Abby shared that she loves seeing people’s faces light up when they realize she, Cade, and Becki are related.

As Mother’s Day approaches, this group had nothing but positive affirmations to share.

Cade:
“I would say to my mom that in the 19 years that I have been on this planet, I experienced every one of those years because of you taking care of me when I was little, when I would get hurt doing stuff I shouldn't have been doing or keeping me out of trouble. I thank you for every second you put your time and effort into taking care of me and helping me get to where I am now.”

Abby:
“My mom is the most hardworking person I know. I tell her all the time that she is my favorite person and my greatest inspiration. When people say I resemble her, it is the best compliment I could ever receive.”

Becki:
“To my children, you inspire me every day to be a better person than I was the day before! Thank you for allowing me to guide you down a path to care for others and our community (or our nation). Being your mom is the greatest gift of all and I love you.”
