HCA Virginia is making a major investment in the health and safety of Virginians, committing nearly $60 million to build three new freestanding emergency rooms in Central and Northern Virginia in some of the Commonwealth’s fastest-growing communities.

This expansion will increase HCA Virginia’s freestanding emergency room footprint from eight to 11, bringing high-quality emergency care closer to where people live, work and raise their families.

Construction begins this month on the sites in the City of Richmond and Chesterfield County and should begin later this year on the Leesburg site in Loudoun County. All three of these sites are slated to open in 2026.

In addition, HCA Virginia is investing $5 million to open three new urgent care centers in the Richmond market over the next two years, increasing its total in Virginia from 12 to 15 locations to further strengthen access to everyday healthcare needs closer to home.

“This is about meeting families where they are,” said Dr. William Lunn, president of HCA Healthcare’s Capital Division. “These new emergency rooms and urgent care clinics are vital community assets that build on the exceptional care we already provide. When every second counts, we want to ensure patients get the help they need — without delay.”

Each freestanding emergency room facility will operate 24/7, 365 days a year, and offer the same level of care as hospital-based ERs — including board-certified emergency physicians, experienced ER nurses, and full diagnostic and imaging capabilities. These freestanding emergency rooms help reduce waiting times at hospital ERs by providing convenient, high-quality care in community settings.

The new facilities are strategically located in areas experiencing rapid population growth. According to the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia, Chesterfield, Richmond and Loudoun are all projected to be among the Top 10 most populous localities in the Commonwealth by 2030.
