LewisGale Hospital Montgomery leaders gather for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the new investment.

LewisGale Hospital Montgomery celebrated the addition of a new 1.5T MRI scanner with a ribbon cutting Monday at the hospital’s main campus in Blacksburg.

The new scanner replaces the hospital’s previous equipment, allowing for better imaging and more efficient workflows, which can lead to shorter wait times and better outcomes. The scans provide highly detailed images of soft tissues, making it ideal for detecting abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord, and joints, such as tumors, inflammation, or injuries.

“This upgrade is a symbol of our ongoing commitment and investment to our patients in the New River Valley,” said Lauren Dudley, LewisGale Hospital Montgomery’s chief executive officer. “With its increased technological capabilities, this new equipment not only provides greater comfort during procedures that can be uncomfortable for some patients but also improves the quality of the images it generates.”

The equipment integrates the latest AI technology and allows for future upgrades without having to replace the entire unit. “MRIs provide exceptionally detailed images that empower providers to make well-informed decisions,” explained Dr. Brandon Langlinais, radiologist. “With this upgrade, our patients can look forward to receiving the highest quality care from the trusted providers they rely on.”

The project represents a $2 million investment for LewisGale Hospital Montgomery. The machine can now accommodate patients with many different body types and scan patients more quickly, leading to decreased appointment waiting times.
