Richmond, Va — Coinciding with International Day of the Midwife, HCA Virginia today announced the launch of Commonwealth Midwifery, a new practice at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital that expands access to connected, patient-centered care for families across Central Virginia.
The practice joins Commonwealth OB/GYN Specialists and OB/GYN Associates in offering comprehensive obstetrics and gynecological care for HCA Virginia patients.
Commonwealth Midwifery provides care across every stage of the journey — from preconception and prenatal visits to labor and delivery and postpartum support. The practice also provides pelvic healthcare, including wellness education and treatment for gynecologic conditions.
For many families, this means a more personal and more connected experience. In the past, some patients may have met a midwife during labor and delivery but did not have access to that same model of care during pregnancy. Now, patients can build a relationship with a trusted midwifery team earlier and stay connected through pregnancy, birth and recovery.
The addition of Commonwealth Midwifery at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital makes it easier for patients seeking a midwife to receive prenatal care and hospital delivery support through one coordinated team. That seamless connection can help families feel more supported, more informed and more confident throughout pregnancy and postpartum care.
‘Our goal is to meet patients where they are and provide compassionate, evidence-based care through every stage of life,’ said Barbara Dudley, certified nurse midwife with Commonwealth Midwifery. ‘By offering care before, during and after birth, we can build stronger relationships with our patients and create a more connected experience from pregnancy through recovery.’
Midwifery care is an option for many patients with low-risk pregnancies and offers a supportive, individualized approach. Patients receive guidance throughout prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum recovery, with their midwife serving as a consistent point of contact along the way.
The certified nurse-midwife team works closely with doctors, neonatal specialists and anesthesia providers at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital to help ensure safe, coordinated care if needs change during pregnancy or delivery. Doulas are also valued members of the birthing team and important partners in supporting patients and families.
In addition to labor and delivery support that respects each patient’s birth preferences, Commonwealth Midwifery offers educational opportunities, including low-intervention birth classes and childbirth education for patients and the community.
By bringing prenatal, delivery and postpartum care together in one practice, Commonwealth Midwifery helps close an important gap for families seeking a more connected pregnancy and birth experience at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.
