HCA Virginia Health Systems hospitals earn top patient safety grades
Eleven hospitals throughout the state are recognized with "A" grades from The Leapfrog Group.
Richmond, VA — Eleven HCA Virginia Health System hospitals earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog that sets standards for excellence in patient care. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.
These 11 HCA Virginia hospitals earned an “A” grade for meeting some of the industry’s highest standards:
- Chippenham Hospital
- Henrico Doctors' Hospital
- Johnston-Willis Hospital
- Parham Doctors' Hospital
- Retreat Doctors' Hospital
- LewisGale Hospital - Alleghany
- LewisGale Hospital – Montgomery
- LewisGale Hospital - Pulaski

“Safely providing world-class care to our patients is our top priority,” said Elizabeth Mikula, HCA Healthcare Capital Division vice president of quality. “Outside reviews of our programs and protocols are held in high regard, and I am proud so many of our HCA Virginia hospitals have been nationally recognized for meeting the industry’s highest standards.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program exclusively based on hospital prevention of medical errors, infections, and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually in the fall and spring.
“Earning an ‘A’ Grade means HCA Virginia made a true commitment to put patients first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, Board, clinicians, staff and volunteers who all had a role to play in this achievement.
