A decade of care in action
After earning her bachelor’s degree in social work, Cheryl Coney, LPC realized that her work only scratched the surface of what was possible in helping others. There was a deeper layer — one rooted in fear — that kept people from healing, and that realization sparked her desire to go further. Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor was the next step in breaking those chains and offering people the tools to reclaim their lives.
In her daily clinical work, Cheryl focuses on helping patients navigate stress and emotional challenges using the principles of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Distress Tolerance skills are central starting with mindfulness and deep breathing, then moving into radical acceptance through self-validation, visualization, and opposite action. These tools allow patients to be present with what is happening now, rather than overwhelmed by it.
The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) at StoneSprings Hospital offers a unique environment for healing. While the reach may be limited by small class sizes, that intimacy fosters a warm, friendly milieu where participants feel safe and supported. The atmosphere is enriched by empathy, kindness, and even snacks. Each session is infused with Cheryl’s enthusiasm, clinical knowledge, and practical application, helping participants integrate skills into their daily lives.
Pursuing credentialing in DBT was a natural extension of Cheryl’s commitment. Holding the title of Certified DBT Therapist is more than a credential — it’s a philosophy. DBT is not just therapy; it’s a lifestyle. The work of Marsha Linehan is honored by delivering the material with depth and integrity, ensuring that participants receive the full benefit of its transformative power.
DBT’s versatility makes it a powerful tool in treating a wide range of emotional and behavioral challenges. It’s the gold standard for borderline personality disorder and has proven effective for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. At StoneSprings about 60% of the groups offered are based on DBT concepts, complemented by CBT and health education groups.
If there’s one message Cheryl wishes to share with the world, it’s this: mental health care is health care. Seeking help is not a weakness, it’s a courageous and wise choice. Even if someone doesn’t know exactly what they need, they deserve support as they explore their path to healing.
