Eight HCA Virginia hospitals have earned spring 2023 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade 'A's.
Richmond, VA — Eight HCA Virginia Health System hospitals were awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2023 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade released today. This national distinction recognizes the hospitals’ achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safe healthcare. Leapfrog assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to general hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections, and other harm to patients in their care.
The following eight HCA Virginia Health System hospitals received an ‘A’ grade:
- Parham Doctors’ Hospital
- Retreat Doctors’ Hospital
- Henrico Doctors’ Hospital
- TriCities Hospital (formerly John Randolph Medical Center)
- Reston Hospital Center
- LewisGale Medical Center
- Lewis Gale Hospital Alleghany
- LewisGale Hospital Montgomery
“Patient safety is of utmost importance to our hospital teams,” said Elizabeth Mikula, HCA Healthcare Capital Division vice president of quality. “We are pleased that this independent review of our patient safety practices shows that our hospitals are among the best hospitals in the nation. We applaud our colleagues who are dedicated to providing world-class patient experiences.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
“This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “But this hospital system received eight ‘A’s’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers, and clinicians who together made that possible.”
