When to go to the emergency room (ER) for chest pain

Don't take chances when it comes to heart attacks. If you have chest pain or discomfort (or other symptoms of a heart attack), you should call 911 or go to our emergency department and be evaluated with X-rays and an electrocardiogram (EKG).

Heart attack signs and symptoms

Some heart attacks can come on suddenly with obvious, intense symptoms, but others may begin with just mild pain and discomfort. Call 911 if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Breaking into a cold sweat
  • Nausea or atypical abdominal pain
  • Pain that travels down one or both arms
  • Pressure, pain or fullness in your chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Unexplained anxiety
  • Unusual weakness or fatigue
