HCA Virginia today celebrated the upcoming opening of Chesterfield ER, a new freestanding emergency room located at 9630 Iron Bridge Road in Chesterfield County and a campus of CJW Medical Center.
The nearly 11,000-square-foot facility, which will open later this month, will provide emergency care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and will be staffed by board-certified emergency room physicians and nurses. Chesterfield ER will offer the same level of emergency services available in a hospital-based emergency room while giving patients in Chesterfield County and surrounding communities a convenient new access point for emergency care.
“Chesterfield ER is about providing additional access, closer to home, and connected to a comprehensive system of care,” said Lance Jones, CEO of Chippenham Hospital. “This new facility is about meeting the needs of a growing community and making sure patients have high-quality emergency care closer to where they live, work and raise their families.”
Chesterfield ER is part of HCA Virginia’s continued investment in expanding access to care across the Commonwealth. HCA Virginia is the most comprehensive provider network in the Commonwealth, with 14 hospitals, 27 outpatient centers, eight freestanding emergency rooms and 12 urgent care centers. In 2026, HCA Virginia is growing its freestanding emergency room footprint from eight to 11 locations, with Scott’s Walk ER and Chesterfield ER opening in June and Leesburg ER and Imaging opening in September.
The project also reflects HCA Virginia’s strategy to create more convenient “front doors” into its system of care. Patients can receive emergency-level treatment in a community setting while remaining connected to HCA Virginia’s broader network for follow-up services, specialty care, imaging, surgery or inpatient care when needed.
“Patients need different levels of care at different times. We have urgent care for everyday needs, freestanding emergency rooms for serious conditions and hospitals for the most complex care,” said Shaila Menees, chief development officer of HCA Healthcare Capital Division. “Our goal is to build a smarter, more convenient system that helps patients get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”
One out of every 15 ER patients in the U.S. receives care at an HCA Healthcare facility. Last year, HCA Healthcare provided emergency care during 10 million emergency room visits, including more than 613,000 in the Commonwealth. The national scale brings shared expertise, proven best practices and advanced resources to patients right here in Virginia.
HCA Virginia is also strengthening everyday access through urgent care. The system is investing millions of dollars to open three new urgent care centers in the Richmond market over the next two years, increasing its urgent care presence in Virginia from 12 to 15 locations.
Chesterfield ER is designed to help reduce strain on hospital-based emergency rooms by offering another emergency-care option in the community and preserving hospital capacity for the sickest patients and the most complex cases.
